Creator and Founder: Judy Groman

In the early 1980s, driven by a passion to broaden fine arts education in elementary schools, Judy Groman founded the Art Masters program. Judy recognized the importance of exposing children to a diverse range of artists—beyond the traditional male figures—believing that every child should be encouraged to develop both their intellect and their unique artistic style. To that end, she introduced students to artists of various genders, artistic approaches, and global influences, laying the foundation for a more inclusive and enriching art education.

Judy earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from California State University, Northridge. Over the years, she built a successful career as a technical illustrator and graphic designer, with one of her most notable projects being the creation of the 1984 summer Olympics calendar. After raising her children, Judy became a dedicated advocate for high-quality fine arts education. She spent several years developing and refining curriculum designed to teach core art elements and studio techniques within a rich art historical context. This work culminated in the “Art Masters Elementary Art Education Program.”

Transition to Poli Rizco

When Judy fell ill and ultimately passed away from breast cancer in 2008, her vision lived on. Her husband carried the program forward, ensuring its continuity until 2015. At that time, the leadership transitioned smoothly to Poli Rizco, who had been with Art Masters from its inception as an assembly instructor. As a result, the program remained rooted in its founding values while gaining fresh perspective and momentum.

Poli’s deep understanding of the program made her uniquely qualified to lead and expand the company, which she rebranded as “Art Masters Legacy.” She enhanced and modernized the assembly materials, making the curriculum more engaging and impactful for students. Poli’s enthusiasm for the arts and her dynamic storytelling brought renewed excitement to school assemblies. Under her guidance, the program was recognized by several school districts for its innovative approach and positive influence on student creativity.

In 2018, Poli hired Annette Crawford as the company’s Business Manager. Annette brought extensive corporate experience in business administration, systems, and accounting, and holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting from the University of Michigan. Leveraging her expertise in IT and administration, Annette quickly responded to the changing educational landscape during the pandemic of 2020 by transitioning Art Masters Legacy to virtual instruction. She also led the company into the 21st century by introducing online teacher support and updating curriculum resources, earning praise from teachers who found the new materials user-friendly and effective.

Current Owner: Annette Crawford

Building on these improvements, Annette Crawford acquired the company in 2023, renaming it “Art Masters Academy.” Her vision is to further invest in curriculum updates and expansion. With support from Art Masters Academy’s dedicated teaching staff, the organization now reaches over 20,000 students annually, receives positive feedback from teachers for its hands-on lessons and clear instructional guides, and has earned recognition from school districts for fostering creativity and engagement in the arts. For the 2026–27 school year, six new lessons will be launched, along with updated worksheets, posters, and interactive assemblies.

Looking to the future, Annette is committed to growing Art Masters Academy by offering its programs to additional schools, as well as expanding into adult classes, private events, and Family Art Nights. Through ongoing innovation and a steadfast dedication to arts education, Art Masters Academy continues to inspire students and enrich communities.
